Hilton Head Kroger already a good neighbor

THE ISLAND PACKET
Letter to the Editor

Much has been written about the aesthetics of the Kroger at Shelter Cove Towne Centre. Many were upset by the removal of trees.

Before the new store came, a blighted mall was there with no hope of recovery. What was produced after it came was a vibrant shopping center with stores owned, operated or staffed by local residents.

Kroger employs 250 associates in the off-season and 325 in season. The empty stores in the mall employed no one. Almost all the other new stores have been rented and should be operational by early summer.

Kroger and its generous associates have contributed to the following organizations, among others: Susan G. Komen; Feeding America; the Salvation Army; the American Cancer Society; Second Helpings of the Lowcountry through the United Way; Deep Well; Hilton Head Island elementary, middle, and high schools; Taste of the Season; the Boy Scouts; the Girl Scouts; the Island Recreation Center; and The Boys and Girls Club of the Lowcountry.

Instead of complaining about the landscaping, think of all the local people Kroger has assisted.
