THE ISLAND PACKET

Whether it’s to buy groceries at the mega-Kroger, to visit the two new restaurants that opened there this summer — Jane Bistro and Charlie Graingers — or even to attend a concert, you’ve probably witnessed the growth at Shelter Cove Towne Center.
Well, I’m here to tell you that there’s more in store.
Maybe you’ve noticed that plot of land that’s roped off with an orange plastic fence between Jane Bistro and Belk.
I did too, and I found out that Spartina 449, the locally based handbag, accessories and apparel company, will build its first Hilton Head Island store at this very spot.
Kay Stanley, the founder and CEO of Spartina 449, told me Thursday she hopes to open in the spring.
“Well, I hope it will be a great experience,” she said. “(Opening a store on Hilton Head Island is) something that we always thought someday we would be able to do and with the Shelter Cove development exploding in such a nice way, we thought that would be a great place to show our brand. We’re very excited.”
Site plans submitted to the Town of Hilton Head Island include a 4,000-square-foot Spartina store to the right of Belk.
The town’s Design Review Board will review the project at its next meeting Sept. 27, according to the board’s agenda.
Before moving to the Lowcountry, I didn’t know much about the Spartina brand, but it’s hard not to notice its popularity and growth.
Stanley said they had about 5,000 customers visit their flagship store on Calhoun Street in Old Town Bluffton this year and by spring, the company should add three new stores — the one in Shelter Cove, a store in Highlands, N.C., and a location in Charleston — to make six locations in total.
“(Expanding the brand is) exciting, it’s fun, it’s a new part of our business that we’re all learning about,” she said.
But that’s not the only big news for Shelter Cove; Rocket Fizz has opened its door to the public and there are plans for a Talbots, two additional tenants and possibly a fab’rik next to the new Spartina location.
