For anyone who may dismiss South Carolina as the land of barbecue and not a place that is friendly to non-animal eaters, don’t be so quick to the judge. The first ever vegan festival to be held in the state is happening on Oct. 22 at the Shelter Cove Community Park on Hilton Head Island. Produced by the Palmetto Plant Eaters Club, the inaugural event will take place from 10 a.m. through 4 p.m. with free admission.

The Lowcountry VegFest will feature vendors of animal-free food and products, beer and wine, food cooking demonstrations, speakers, advocacy, education, live music, and entertainment for the kids. Over 40 vendors from the region will be in attendance.

The event’s headline speaker will be Howard Lyman, who is best known in the vegan world as an animal rights activist that promotes vegan nutrition and organic farming. Lyman was recently featured in Cowspiracy: The Sustainability Secret, a documentary produced by Leonardo DiCaprio.

In lieu of a ticket price, the VegFest organizers request that attendees bring a non-perishable vegan food item to stock the Sandalwood Community Food Pantry. The full event schedule can be found at www.lowcountryvegfest.com.
