A fast-growing burger chain will open this spring on Hilton Head Island.

Construction started Wednesday on Wayback Burgers at Shelter Cove Towne Centre, according to a news release.

The company started in Delaware as Jake's Hamburgers in 1991 and went national in 2009. It has more than 80 restaurants in 24 states, and plans to have more than 100 by the end of the year, the release said.

Wayback's Hilton Head location is its second in South Carolina. The other is in Spartanburg. A Savannah restaurant opens Friday at 8108 Abercorn St., according to the release.

The burger chain is another example of the burgeoning fast-casual restaurant industry that has captured the attention of millennial consumers and put pressure on traditional fast-food restaurants.

Other such restaurants include Five Guys Burgers and Fries -- which has locations on Hilton Head and in Bluffton -- and Chipotle Mexican Grill, which opened last month at Tanger Outlets Center 1.
